Director
Angela Tipps

A native of Murfreesboro, Angela Tipps is completing her 25th year at the MTSU School of Music. She conducts the SOAL (Soprano-Alto) and TEBA (Tenor-Bass) Chorale, oversees the music appreciation courses, teaches basic and choral conducting, and serves as musical director for the theatre department (“Cabaret” in April). Her MTSU choirs have performed for regional and state conferences of the American Choral Directors Association and the Tennessee Music Education Association.

In 1996, Angela founded the Nashville Chamber Singers, an elite group of singers specializing in unaccompanied choral music. They premiered Dr. Rosephanye Powell’s “Cry of Jeremiah” with organ and orchestra for the 2012 national convention of the American Guild of Organists. Their performance of Bach’s “Magnificat” at the Ryman Auditorium was recorded for National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.” The Chamber Singers wrapped up nearly 25 years together in December 2022.

Angela just completed her 20th year as the Organist and Director of Music at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Murfreesboro. Her colleague, Dr. Susan Kelly, became the choir director in January 2023, and the two of them work together to oversee a comprehensive music ministry at this historic downtown church.

A 1985 graduate of MTSU (organ performance), Angela studied organ with Dr. Janette Fishell. She received the Master of Church Music at Scarritt Graduate School in Nashville, where she studied organ with Dr. Wilma Jensen and choral conducting with Dr. Sandra Willetts (one of the conductors of the Middle Tennessee Choral Society!). For ten years she was a full-time organist and director of music at two large United Methodist churches before a brief stint in elementary music education. She and her husband Dale have two grown children, Virginia and Sam.
